Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), National Standards Body of the Government of India, has notified 500 internship opportunities for students from its MoU partner institutions. It was announced in the recently held Annual Convention of BIS Standardisation Chairs and Nodal Faculty of MoU Partner Institutions.
These internships will be made available to students undertaking 4-year degree programmes, 5-year integrated degree courses, postgraduate degrees, and diploma courses. The internships, as per the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, will last for eight weeks and involve pre-standardisation activities in two important industries.
The participants will also carry out Quality Control Order (QCO) compliance surveys in conjunction with BIS offices, and site visits to large-scale units, MSMEs, and laboratories.
In the course of internship, students will conduct in-depth studies on the manufacturing and test processes, the raw materials, in-process control, and the different aspects of product quality and conformity assessment.
Emphasizing the success of the BIS-Academia interface, BIS informed that standardisation modules have been integrated into the curriculum of 15 institutions. Over 130 research and development projects have been launched. More than 50 institutions have set up BIS Corners and Academic Dashboards to increase awareness and participation.
198 Standards Clubs have been established in 52 institutes, and over 3,400 students from 74 institutes have attended national quizzes. The next 500 student internships are scheduled for the 2025–26 academic year.
In his inaugural address, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari underlined that the BIS-academia collaboration is a joint national endeavor to inculcate a culture of quality and standardisation in the educational sector.
Deputy Director General (Standardisation), BIS, Rajeev Sharma, urged partner institutions to adopt action-oriented collaborations and play an active role in enriching the quality ecosystem of the country.
The convention included technical sessions on curriculum integration, standards development, student participation through Standards Clubs, and other publicity activities. An open house discussion facilitated institutions to share best practices and innovative models of academia for further collaboration.
The convention concluded with a common pledge to solidify the culture of standardisation in Indian academia and prepare students and faculty to interact effectively with national and international quality systems.
The convention saw the presence of 58 partner institutes including IIT Roorkee, SSEC Chennai, NIT Jalandhar, SVCE Chennai, and PSNACET Dindigul who were felicitated for their exceptional work in BIS-related activities.
